eBay Find of the Day: Ferm Living Wallpaper

Not ready to commit to wallpaper in a big way? Just think of all the fun projects you could do with a single roll of modern, graphic wallpaper: You could paper the back of a bookcase, affix the paper to drawer fronts, layer it under a piece of glass cut to fit a dresser-top or a coffee table, wrap it around plain lampshades, make a faux headboard, paper the inside of a paneled door, paper just the wall behind the vanity in a small powder room ...

Danish design company Ferm Living makes some of the most beautiful wallpaper patterns around -- whether you're papering an entire room or experimenting with wallpaper in smaller doses. Each 21-inch by 32-foot roll normally retails for $85 -- but it never hurts to check eBay to see if you can get a better deal because someone is selling off the extra roll they wound up not needing or chickened out on using.

Right now, eBay seller danclarkatlanta has seven single rolls of seven different Ferm paper patterns (including Orchid, top, Berry Black, middle, and Silhouette, above, among others) listed with Buy It Now prices of $55 per roll. (So grab 'em before they're gone.)

I keep seeing references from independent designers to Supermarket, so I decided to head on over to check it out.

Even after spending a good amount of time surfing around there, though, I'm still a little unclear on what, exactly, the Brooklyn-based Supermarket actually is: An online design collective? An indie-focused e-tailer? An Etsy-like virtual marketplace (and indeed, I have seen many of these items on Etsy) -- but with bigger-name designers like Perch!, Deadly Squire, Ferm Living, and Blissen thrown into the mix? Supermarket bills itself as "a curated collection of awesome design products," so I guess I'll just have to go with that.

Cool Stuff: Ferm Living Oilcloths

I don't know what the weather's been like in your neck of the woods, but here in Northern California it was blistering hot this weekend. (Is it global warming? Is the Bay Area the new Palm Springs? I'm busy plotting our move to Vancouver through the sweat over here ... )

Anyway, all this unseasonal heat has me itching to move mealtimes outside, where we can take shelter under the shade of our towering birch tree while praying for a cooling breeze. And what better way to dress the patio table than with these brand-new oilcloths (such as Family Tree, above) from Denmark's Ferm Living, the maker of some of the coolest modern wallpapers around?

Even if it's still chilly in your area or you don't have an outdoor dining space, these are a fun way to dress up your kitchen or dining table -- and are particularly great if you have spill-prone kids.

Ferm's oilcloth is about $28 per linear meter, which is roughly 39 inches; the oilcloth comes in 55-inch widths, so if you want a tablecloth that's about four and a half feet wide by six and a half feet long, order two meters. It's available through the Scandinavian Design Center -- which also carries beautiful oilcloths from Marimekko, Pappelina, and Susanne Schjerning.

Cool Stuff: WallCollection Custom Wallpaper

Have you heard about WallCollection? It's a new series of custom panoramic wallpapers from Danish design darlings Ferm Living, featuring enormous digitally printed photographic images and artwork that's sized to fit your space.

You can choose from designs by the likes of Julia Rothman -- whose Red Sky and Pink Paisley patterns are featured at top and above -- and a host of other internationally renowned artists, photographers, and designers.

The matte, wipeable wallpaper arrives in strips and goes up quickly and easily, since you apply the glue to your wall rather than the paper. With a few exceptions, the paper costs $94 a meter, which translates to about $875 for a 10-by-10-foot wall.

You can create wallpaper from your own images, too, such as the ones above and below. Simply upload a high-resolution photo, enter your wall dimensions, crop or otherwise tweak your image as needed, and place your order.

The service isn't super-cheap, mind you -- the image I tested out would cost about $650 for a 10-by-10-foot wall. But then, things as awesome as this rarely are. Plus, you'd have something totally unique.
