Wanderlust: Portland, Here I Come!

I've been waxing on about Portland, Oregon for so long that my husband finally got sick of hearing about it and just surprised me with a plane ticket.

I'm leaving tomorrow (aaackk! so little time to plan ...), staying at the Jupiter Hotel (the Kennedy School and Ace Hotel are booked, unfortunately), and will have two days to explore the city.

I'm planning to hit the 38,000-square-foot Rejuvenation flagship store and Powells Books, and wander around the Pearl District, of course. Oh, and I can't forget to stop in at Voodoo Doughnut for one of their infamous maple-bacon bars.

What else should I put on the agenda? Which can't-miss shops should I plan visits to, and what neighborhoods would you recommend checking out for someone who thinks that Portland might be a great place to live?

Any tips from Portlanders and others familiar with the city are much appreciated -- please post 'em here, quick!

The last time I was in Portland, my brother took us to this little place down in the Hawthorne district named the Cup & Saucer Cafe. They had wonderful omelets and great vegetarian selection.

Apparently, just around the corner from the Cup & Saucer Cafe in an alley is the "Waffle Window". There is a lady who serves waffles out an alley window. My brother said he would take us there next time we were in town.

As a transplant to Portland two years ago, I've thoroughly enjoyed the eclectic green city. I would highly recommend stopping by the Portland Saturday Market; it's just a few blocks from Voodoo Doughnut and is open on Saturday and Sunday.

Powells and Rejuvenation are fun favorites no matter the time of year. If the weather is nice, and you have transportation, Multnomah Falls is a must see. Just east of the city, about 25 minutes, the falls are right off of the interstate. You can enjoy exquisite views of the waterfalls as well as great food (and views) from the historic lodge (http://www.multnomahfallslodge.com/).
Hope that you have a wonderful weekend!

You're probably already on your way, so I just wanted to tell you to have a GREAT time!

If you *do* get this before you leave... the main Powell's is awesome, but don't forget that they have a satellite Home and Garden bookstore, which (I'm guessing) would also be of interest to you. Here's the link to that: http://www.powells.com/info/places/cookbookmap.html

Don't be sad if you miss it, though -- Powell's in any form totally rocks.

Have fun!

Thanks Onion, Hillary, and Kelly!

I don't leave until noon today (Tuesday) and may be able to check in once or twice while I'm there, so keep those Portland tips coming!

All the best,

Leah

Ooh, exciting! I haven't been so I don't have any tips to offer, but I can't wait to hear about it when you get back. Then I'll have more to add to my list.

One thing though: definitely try and get some Stumptown Coffee while you're there.
