Good Reads (Gone): Domino Magazine is No More

Domino magazine is ceasing publication, it was announced today. The March issue will be Domino's last.

There have been rumblings that the magazine was in trouble for awhile -- and plenty of other home-design titles have been shuttered recently due to this piss-poor economy -- so it's not like the news is coming completely out of the blue.

But still, I'm speechless. And sad. I guess I'll have no choice but to console myself with $9 imported copies of Living, Etc.

Where will you be getting your shelter porn now?

Oh this is terrible. Domino was one of those magazines I enjoyed the most in my mailbox. I guess I'll just have to get my porn from blogs and the backgrounds of photos in my Smithsonian subscription.

If they credit the remaining issues in my subscription with Elle Decor (which was already credited further from Home's collapse), I'm going to be getting that pretentious magazine for 10 years.

I am a bit heartbroken over this one. It was by far my favorite to read personally & a joy to work with, occassionally.

:(

I don't even know where to go next. And I ditto Melissa's comment above, re: Elle Decor.

rawr! ugh.

I dont like elle decor at all!! I cant even begin to afford anytihng they put in there..I guess I'll put it towards Vogue, but I cant afford anything in there either

I can't afford anything that's in any of those magazines, but I love the inspiration. I'll prob get Elle because it's cheap, but Elle Decor UK is better, and Living Etc is my fave.

I am mortified. Elle Decoration (UK) it is then, and of course Living Etc (sent by Mum in England so a little bit cheaper than the import $)

a knife to my gut, this was. domino was THE magazine that i felt was aimed at my demographic- people who aren't millionaires, yet love style in their lives.

so sad. and sadder still, i think bloggers like moi-self are partially responsible- we liked it so much, we loved it to death.

i wonder who's next? better not be house beautiful, 'cause i think that's my fave of the dwindling pack.

So sad! I love them!

Elle Decor (US) is nice to look at, but everything in it is so far out-of-reach for non-millionaires that I find little inspiration there. And, for whatever reason, House Beautiful does absolutely nothing for me ... I think perhaps the homes it showcases are a little too "done" and buttoned-up for my tastes.

I find myself much more inspired by young artists and other creative types who are living on a shoestring and yet still manage to pull together quirky, interesting, personal, and even beautiful homes.

Which I guess is why I mostly read design blogs (at least the ones that feature original content) these days.

If nothing else, I hope that one of the side effects of the dwindling number of shelter magazines is that more bloggers (including yours truly) start looking for inspiration in the real world around them and blog more about that.

I'll be reading Living, Etc. now, too -- it's way more similar to domino than the other US shelter mags. I just wish a subscription to it didn't cost over $100!

Oh, pity. Agreed, House Beautiful lacks quirkiness --it's the rich living in Connecticut -- and Elle Decor lacks reality -- it's the same rich but they've moved to Paris! Is Dwell too -- what's the right word? -- medical? i.e. if Domino is porn Dwell is invitro fertilization?

Eileen -- great analogies for HB/ED and Domino/Dwell!

Re: Dwell. I think "sterile" is the word you're searching for. And "holier-than-thou."

I've just spent an enjoyable hour looking at your blog which is SO interesting !
So happy I found you !
I hope you will visit me sometime
very sad that another magazine will be gone . I felt sad when Home Companion closed up .

anyway ..... love your blog !

eileenerb- couldn't agree with you more. Dwell is so sterile. I've never picked up Living, Etc. Do you all honestly think it's as good as Domino?

Leah said...

Sarah -- I think Living, Etc. is better than Domino and well worth the (hefty) price tag. I haven't tagged anything in Domino for months and months, but every issue of Living, Etc. winds up sporting dozens of sticky notes.

There's a lot of content, too -- it takes me several days to get through (probably because I want to savor and soak up everything) vs. Domino, which I can whip through in an hour or less.

I'll be reading Living Etc., Elle Decoration from the UK (love them both dearly), Vogue Living from Australia, Metropoliton Home (I like that one ok), House Beautiful (someone just got me a subscription, otherwise I would never read this), possibly Dwell (but I unsubscribed a little while ago because I was so bored with it). California Home and Design is one that I pick up for free at the SF design center. I also have a ReadyMade subscription but they just got bought out too and the background story sounds pretty shady on that one! Bleak times. I already miss Domino.

Re: Melissa H -
Elle Decor is published by Hachette Filipacchi, so you won't be receiving that one as a Domino replacement. Lucky would be my guess (I know, I know, paltry substitute, etc).

Sarah Bradley said...

Leah- I checked out Living Etc. Website and don't see any bookstores listed for the US. Where do you pick up yous? I think I'm going to check it out, especially after what you said! :)

Also- I agree Domino has been a bit of a disappointment lately but I did still love it!

Sarah,

My local Barnes & Noble stocks Living, Etc., as well as a decent selection of other international design mags.

Any good newspaper and magazine shop should have it, too. In Oakland, I really like Issues off Piedmont Ave. (It's dangerous for me to go there, tho, because I'm tempted to drop WAY too much cash!)

Say it isn't so! When Blueprint went under I put it off as my brilliant and unique taste just wasn't shared by enough people :) but alas, it's the economy. The magazine bleeding must stop! Where's that stimulus package?!

P.S. I still shell out $9 fr Living, Etc. even when they had more competition...

Sarah Bradley said...

Leah- Thanks so much for the tip on Barnes and Noble. I'll have to make a trip this weekend!

oh, boy, I feel like dying. And yes, consoling myself with Living, Etc. is about all I can do (and I was just debating whether to spend the money on a subscription)! Problem is if they go out of business, I'll have to kill myself! Domino was my favorite mag., and it took me 20 years to find it.
