The Artful Home: Lisa Solomon at Tiny Showcase

I think I had a little too much fun last night, and I'm paying the price for it this a.m. (I'm not 22 anymore, though I occasionally forget that.) So I'm not even going to try to say anything remotely articulate here right now.

Anyway: New lovely loveliness from one of my very favorite local artists, Lisa Solomon. The limited-edition "Doily Body: Lungs" print, released yesterday evening, is $20 at Tiny Showcase. They're almost gone, so grab yours quick.

Now, it's a couple of Advil, a handful of Tums, and back to bed for me ... I'll see you back here a little later, if my head doesn't explode first.

The Artful Home: We = Trouble

Last fall, the print-release site Tiny Showcase put together a group show at Brooklyn's Secret Project Robot gallery. Called We = Trouble, the show featured collaborative works (as well as several solo pieces) by a international group of 32 artists. (Above: Three Cranes and a Deer by Nigel Peake and Holly Rice.)

The exhibit "was designed to showcase communities of artists that do not subscribe to traditional art world values of egocentricity and competition, but rather foster communities of trust and encouragement. Sixteen artists were given complete freedom to invite a partner that they would most enjoy collaborating with. Responding with an avalanche of marathon drawing jams, long-distance parcel post, fake feuds, spying, empty threats, pseudo sabotage, and curiosity, the participants spent the last six months oscillating between forgetting about the show altogether to pulling all-nighters just trying to out-trouble one another, or simply trying to trouble to their maximum extent."

A few of the artists are familiar names -- there's a significant Bay Area contribution, for instance -- but many of them are new to me (and several of those were love at first sight). Now these original artworks are available through the Tiny Showcase website. Some of my favorite pieces:

The Artful Home: Summer Collection at Tiny Showcase

Print-release site Tiny Showcase just unveiled its Summer Collection, consisting of four open-edition 8-by-10-inch prints from artists Julie Morstad, Ryan McLennan, Amy Ruppel, and Andrew Holder. All are wonderful, but Morstad's haunting Untitled, above, has me swooning.

The Artful Home: Marci Washington at Tiny Showcase

I'm excited to see work from one of my favorite local artists, Marci Washington, as this week's print release at Tiny Showcase. The clever scribes behind Tiny Showcase say, "If Wuthering Heights had included more decapitation, if Jane Eyre had met a cannibal, if The Turn of the Screw had cranked up the lust, if you smashed any epic and romantic social commentary novel into any haunting ghostly horror film, you are beginning to understand the territory that Marci treads." I can't put it better than that, folks.

Tiny Showcase is offering Washington's exquisitely creepy "The Coming Darkness" (top) and "The Cannibal in His Chamber" (above) as a limited-edition diptych. It goes on sale for $40 right here at 4:30 p.m. Pacific Time Tuesday, June 10.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the San Francisco SPCA, from which Washington and her S.O., artist Deth P. Sun, adopted the dashing Mr. Thor.

The Artful Home: Lisa Solomon and Aurora Robson Couplet Print at the Shiny Squirrel

Were you lucky enough to nab one of Lisa Solomon and Aurora Robson's "Couplet" prints at Tiny Showcase awhile back? I was waiting for my flight home at the Portland Airport, but had my husband on standby to get one the minute they went up.

If you missed that print release -- or if you want a companion piece from Solomon and Robson, drop everything and head on over to the Shinny Squirrel, where the artists have just released Carbon Tetrachloride + Cosmic Wheel, a new "Couplets" print in ochre and gray.

Each 8-by-8-inch, signed and numbered print (of a diptych from Solomon and Robson's joint show at Nashville's SqFt Gallery earlier this year) is $58. This is a limited edition of 50, so act fast if you want one.

(P.S. More evidence to support the theory The New York Times recently posited on the arty connection between Brooklyn and Oakland: Robson lives and works in Brooklyn, and Solomon in Oakland. Cue spooky Twilight Zone music now ... )

The Artful Home: Tuesday Print Releases

Tuesdays are big days for fans of limited-edition print sites 20x200 and Tiny Showcase, since that's the day each reveals its latest print release from established and up-and-coming artists.

I really like both of the new prints on offer today: Daisy, at top, by L.A.'s Christina Muraczewski, is $20 from 20x200. Don't snooze on this one, since more than half of the limited-edition run of 200 8.5-by-11-inch prints are already gone.

And Lucky, by Italy's amazing The Good Machinery, is $20 at Tiny Showcase. There are only 100 copies of this 4.25-by-5.75-inch print available, so grab yours fast.
